Subject: [ILUG] DSL over ISDN from Eircom

There's been a bit of discussion about this here recently but the short
answer is - don't hold your breath. Apparently some people have been told
that this would be available in Sep/Oct - what they're talking about is ISDN
to DSL migration. At the moment, if you want DSL and you have an ISDN line,
you have to have the ISDN line downgraded to POTS (for which you pay) and
then have the POTS line tested for ADSL compatibility. If you're unlucky
enough to have a line which is OK for ISDN but not for ADSL, you'll have to
pay AGAIN to have your line re-upgraded to ISDN.

So, in October they're coming out with an ISDN to DSL migration package. I
don't know what it entails, but presumably it's some kind of marketing
bullshit packaging all of the above together.

On a related note, I asked also about DSL modems. The Eircom person said
that you MUST purchase equipment from them if you want one of the lower
grades of DSL service. Bad enough that we have to pay at least 3 times what
the rest of Europe pays for our DSL service but they also want to force us
to pay ripoff rates for equipment. As it is my understanding that tying the
provision of telecoms service to the provision of equipment is now not
allowed because of telecoms deregulation (such as it is in this benighted
land) I have raised a question on this matter with the ODTR and I have been
promised a response by this evening.
