PPPoE implies ethernet bridging underneath it. AFAIK Eircom's
configuration is no different from hundreds of other DSL providers
around the world doing PPPoE. At least no different from the consumer
point of view. I don't know what's going on at the far end of the line.
If Eircom can't get their 4-port router to NAT it's not because of the
underlying DSL technology. It's either an *exceptionally* poor choice of
router or it's Eircom staff being unable to read/understand the router
manual.
What's going on in that black-box router should be no different to what
I'm doing in my old PC router. In fact many of the DSL router products
out there use BSD or Linux to work their magic - so I don't understand
Niall's aversion to using an old PC as a router. Once it's installed and
working you don't have to touch it if you don't want to. You don't have
to mess with the kernel. You know exactly what it's running. You have
the power to change it whatever way you want and add to it with your own
code if absolutely necessary. All the best arguments for running Linux
/anywhere/.
IMHO the only people here who should be looking at a stand alone
off-the-shelf router are the ones without an old PC gathering dust in
the corner.
Paul.
