In case anyone's interested ... I've been setting up a new system for
myself at home, and had a few problems with Ximian Gnome. Because I'm on
a dial-up connection I downloaded the Ximian rpm's at ...um...work, but
had a couple of problems with their instructions for installation from
local media:
Problem:
Whenever I try the local media option the installer fails to contact
Ximian's server, stopping the installation from proceeding.
Solution: Do the network install, but first copy Ximian's rpm's to
/var/spool/redcarpet/packages/ . Then when you start installing the
files at the prompt choose the "Always use existing files" option.
Problem: If, like me, you have /var on a separate partition you might
not have sufficient space for all the rpm's.
Solution: ln -sd /filesystem/with/space /var/spool/redcarpet/packages
will create a symbolic link to the filesystem on a partition with space.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has ever got Ximian's instructions
for installing from local media to work as advertised, and has any idea
why I couldn't. I was online when I ran the installer.
Matthew
