I'll suggest Sybase if you're wanting to pay for it ... ASE is quite nice to
both admin and program ... although it does have quirks the newer versions
are good.

Obviously get training up on whatever you choose, seriously, it's worth it.
And get a professional DBA to set it up and give you the "cheat-sheet" on
common problems and their solutions ...
