Dunno what Ingres was like but...

Postgres is great !

I use it for lots of stuff...one of my tables just went over 2Gb in size, no problem for it.

Excellent language/platform support (Perl, Ruby, PHP, JDBC, ODBC)

Easy to admin (http://phpPhAdmin.sf.net)

Great *free* documentation (http://www.commandprompt.com -> click on "practical postgresql")

Robust. No locking problems, using versioning like Oracle. Triggers, Views, Transactions....

Very extensible (custom functions etc) and has some great features (3d table structures, regex's...)

I love it :)

(And fail to see why everyone touts MySQL as *the* free software db)

-Niall.
