that sounds fine really. but you could use cvs as an alternative.
it would be silly, but it's an option.
rsync to a cvs tree on the archive (excluding cvs dirs/files).
some script to add new files to cvs.
cvs ci.
cvs tag for that day.
and then whatever cvs command you need to issue to delete old versions
of the files.
a webcvs interface could be used to restore.
downside - you have to store two copies of the data. the working tree
and the actual repository.
