On the Linux mail server, run POSTFIX! (simple to setup, defaults to
_not_ being an open relay, and has capabilities that you need for
virus scanning).

Vexira MailArmor seems to be highly approved¹, it's performance is
absolutely excellent, however depending on the actual users, it
might be overkill for your needs.

Personally, I would have a virus scanner on both ends, if it were
possible. However, if it's not, do it on the mail client end,
especially if you have people receiving mail from home or out of the
office.

MailArmor does support automatic updates of it's signatory database.

No doubt you'll get plenty of other options, but that's my 2ē.
