ok, i've upgraded my kernel yet again. and i'm still getting errors
on eth1. the ifconfig entries for eth[01] are:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:A5:07:13:63
          inet addr:192.168.7.31 Bcast:192.168.7.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::202:a5ff:fe07:1363/10 Scope:Link
          inet6 addr: 2002:3e11:a253:f100::1/64 Scope:Global

          RX packets:326144 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

          Interrupt:10 Base address:0xd000

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:E2:2E:A8:DE
          inet addr:62.17.162.83 Bcast:62.17.162.95 Mask:255.255.255.240

          inet6 addr: fe80::204:e2ff:fe2e:a8de/10 Scope:Link

          TX packets:0 errors:104825 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:209650
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:38277532 (36.5 Mb) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0xb800

eth0 is the lan link. eth1 is connected to a cisco via a crossover cable.
the numbers seem wildly off - at least for a link that i'm actually
shooting data through.

/etc/modules.conf contains this btw:

    alias eth0 eepro100
    alias eth1 tulip
