Having been through the same hassle six months ago, here is my experience:
Most of the vendors on the UltraLinux site no longer provide SPARC binaries.
The only recent versions I could find were SuSe and Debian. SuSe was 7.3 and
worked fine as a desktop but sucked somewhat as a mail gateway.
I switched to Debian and have not looked back. The binaries seem to be up to
date with the x86 version and configuration is so much simpler. It helps to
have a fast download link, although installs off CD are also fine.
I also have Debian installed on a 2x200MHz Enterprise 3000 with 128Mb of
RAM. It was unusable with Solaris but works just fine as a web/database
server with Debian.
One thing to watch out for: there is a bug with Debian 3.0r0. There is a
typo on the boot CD (it tries to call a loader with the name "sparc64" when
it is supposed to be "Sparc64" - or something.) It is simple enough to work
around, and only affects the installation process.
Let me know if you would like some help with configuring Debian. Or you can
borrow my SuSe 7.3 disks or first Debian CD if these would help.
