I'm trying to convince a friend that they should use Linux on their systems at
work instead of WinNT/XP-Pro. I've won on all sorts of fronts, ranging from
fileserver to printers to openoffice to gimp. Except one.
He argues that two identical systems, 800MHz each, show his reason not to do
it. He's got RH7.3 on one box, and uses mozilla 1.1. He's got XP
Professional on the other, and also uses mozilla 1.1. On the XP host, he
shows how that system's browser displays web pages at a much faster rate than
does the same box with RedHat on it. Then he uses IE, and that's even (a
bit) faster. Add privoxy on the linux box actually made it a bit
slower---I'd hoped the editing out of crap would help, but the XP box still
flew.
Any suggestions? System tweaks, optimizations, whatever you may have in your
bag of tricks to help things? I found that his linux config had the system
running named for itself; making him set it to use the same nameserver as
what's set up for the XP box did a slight improvement, but nothing dramatic.
He doesn't want to switch to opera on the linux box, which I felt would be
something of a push since I've seen mozilla improve a good amount but still
see opera go faster.
I'm open to all sorts of tricks. :-)
Thanks,
B
