You could try compiling the kernel with Robert Love's Kernel Preemption patch.
That speeds up graphical apps like mozilla quite a bit in my experience.

Also make sure you've got XFree86 setup with optimal drivers etc. Enabling DRI on a supported card or using NVidia's own drivers (rather than the 'nv' 2d driver) might help too.
