First, pop over to
http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/apt.freshrpms.net/redhat/7.X/en/i386/RPMS.freshrpms/
and install the apt RPM.
Then, change your /etc/apt/source.list file to read:
rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/apt.freshrpms.net redhat/7.1/en/$(ARCH) os powertools updates freshrpms
rpm-src http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/apt.freshrpms.net redhat/7.1/en/$(ARCH) os powertools updates freshrpms
(needless to say, I use RH7.1 - change as desired).
Run; "apt-get update;apt-get dist-upgrade" to upgrade yourself.
Then, grab:
http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~valen/apticron-1.1-0.i386.rpm (or apticron-1.1-0.src.rpm).
Edit your /etc/apticron/apticron.conf file, and specify an email address.
Every night, your machine will download the latest updates and email you
that they are there, so you can run "apt-get dist-upgrade" at your
leisure.
Apticron is a little crontab Colm Mac Carthaigh from Heanet knocked up
(which I've modified slightly). Enjoy. Hopefully, you'll be then ready to
upgrade to 8.0 when it's released on monday.
John
