capitalisation, same start on cool hardware, same move from
to software, etc. etc. Same fate, I fear.
Be and NeXT for all there similarities are two different companies,
both driven by two of Apples greatest visionaries. Steve Jobs set out to
create a tasteful version of Unix and he succeeded with NeXTSTEP. Gasse
wanted to create a better tool for developers and from what I've seen and
read, he did that with BeOS.
The difference is however is that Steve had his revenge against
Gasse (One of the people he blames for having him exiled from Apple), Steve
won, when he beat out BeOS in the race to update the MacOS.
Most people don't seem to understand that the Apple of old is dead.
NeXT however is alive, well and living under an assumed name in Cupertino.
When Be lost that battle they lost everything. The sole reason Gasse created
BeOS was so he could sell it back to Apple at a later date when people
realised that Copland was not going to come off.
Not many people are now going to develop for the BeOS as instead of
the " us and Windows" situation Gasse wanted. we now have "us, MacOS X,
Linux, AmigaOE and Windows" situation.
