LAID is an event being run professionally. Thus if we spread too thin,
we seem unprofessional. The acronym GITS LAID is unexciting, and
extremly loud if you read it, it gives the impression that the event
will not be of a high calibre.
As for setting up some sort of Hardware revival and distribution thing,
its out of the question. School Teachers no matter how good technically
they are, are on a level daily where they are dealing with children,
this transposes itself into their dealings with adults too - Ive worked
for a Schoolteacher, and this is most definetly accurate. If you offer
them Linux when windows works, where a knowledge of windows helps their
job in making it look like they know more than the pupils, and a lack of
knowledge re Linux threatens their jobs, its easy to see what they will
choose.
Neither do we have the resources to do such an event on the LAID day.
This day is going to be clinical. If people want to go and chat
generally about Linux and the possibilities of getting it into Schools,
then by all means do. There is a time and a place for that on the day,
its the pub that evening. During the day, there will be one hour
available for lunchs where you will be free to question the topics
raised by each speaker. The talks will be that, talks, not q & a.
If you feel a need for the redistribution of hardware is necessary, and
for the benefit of all humanity, rather than for the few, then organise
a thread of interested people. LAID is going to be a day of Linux
enthusiasm, of learning (Well, no one really knows as much as Kenn
Humborg, no matter how good we think we are ;), and of fun. Above all,
this is a day that will mark the entrance of Linux into the Professional
Irish Technologies Market.
If anyone is offended by the above, I apologize. I have a set plan for
the day, and I've put too much so far into organising this event. If
you have a specific request for an event for the day, mail me, and we
will discuss it
