Paul,
It's an international english character set thing ...
The idea is that you can enter the accented characters easily (not resorting
to ALT-133 for à for example)
You'll notice that the [Space] key works as well for the extra key :o)
You can fix it by setting your character set to English - Ireland if you
want :o)
