Two reasons for use of ac rather than dc are that ac enables you to transmit
the power at high voltage low current then transform cheaply at the other
end. Secondly an ac electric shock will tend to throw you away from the
source whereas a dc shock will make your muscles tense and will hold you
until your nuts sizzle.
As for interference look for large transformers or cellular phone nodes
antennas nearby.
