Yeah , I have to agree . The libc situation is crazy. I had to explain to
a friend of mine a few months ago why her SUSE distro ( that I advised her
to get ) wouldn't run the BitchX IRC client that she had downloaded.
She couldn't believe that SUSE would persist with their own version of libc
which many developers didn't support. I suppose that it is OK if you have
source ( though bloody inconvenient ) but she reckoned that it was "worse
than Microsoft" and wasn't very impressed at all.
One handy solution ( that star office used to provide ) was the ability to
load glibc2 on a libc based system so you could run glibc2 apps like Star
Office The problem there was that it was possible that further
incompatabilities between libraries would be revealed as soon as this
problem was surmounted ...
