a frequent enough question that i've been asked is "yeah, but how do you
make money with free software?"

redhat is now at $123 a share. bob young and marc ewing are now both
billionares. (of course just like bill gates[0] if they attempt to get
all that money it will be much less. a sell order on 9 million shares
tends to drive down demand...)

it would be nice to see a company like cygnus or suse do it too, but
i'm glad a company that's almost[1] purely a free software company did
it first and is performing so well.

yeay!

[0] though in bill gates' case his sell order would equal the gnp of
     several small countries.
[1] netscape isn't free s/w. they tried plying motif/cde and applix
a few years ago but dropped them a year ago. cde rather harshly
by saying it had a security bug and since it wasn't free software
they couldn't fix it (nicely implying that free software leads
to more responsive vendors). and like suse they've been extracting
drivers from graphics card companies - even in binary form if they
     can't get free ones.
