check /var/log/messages to see if it's running into authentication
probs.
On the same theme, by the way : what on earth is gdm?
There's a lock file in /var/gdm which is root access only, and which is
locking other users out of using X at all.
xdm starts automatically when the machine boots, and root can login
without
problems. Any other users, however, login successfully, start the new
session,
and promptly fail back to the xdm login. /var/log/messages reports an
error
in accessing the gdm/:0.auth file (which is created on the fly each time
with
root only access permissions).
I've never had this problem before... this is a fresh install of RH 6.0,
on
exactly the same hardware as was working perfectly beforehand.
I can't find any mention of gdm anywhere, although I assume it's some
form
of security/access control system for the local X display. Any ideas?
Finally, I have to report that after 5 years of working with Linux, it
finally crashed on me... worthless piece of shit ;-)
(Recompiling a sound module, removing it and reinserting it while
running
x11amp, if you must know :-)
