I am using KDE and GNOME, I also think there crap. I'll give your suggestion a
try, can't get any worse anyway,

 Yes, I found that gdm, the Gnome graphical login was a buggy
 piece of crap in some cases, so if that's what you're using,
 simply change to kdm. I personally don't run KDE or Gnome
 these days - XFCE/XFWM 3 was just released.
 
 See /etc/X11/prefdm - it's a link to the desktop manager
 you're using. 'ln -sf /usr/bin/kdm /etc/X11/prefdm' should
 do the trick. Of course, if you're using KDM already, I'm
 stumped.
