While your are connected, type
# route -n
to display the routing table. Look for the line beginning with 0.0.0.0
The Gateway address on this line is the router at the other end of your
PPP connection. Try pinging that address to eliminate any problems
further upstream. Use ping -v and see if any interesting errors are
displayed.
Show us the output of
# ifconfig ppp0
Are you using any special PPP options? Check the contents of /etc/ppp/options.
