: Over in France I bought a mag called "Linux France" and on the cover CD
: it had (among other things)
: gcc 2.95
: gimp 1.1.8
: kde 1.2 pre
: glide
: lots of gtk and kde apps
: hurd
: games including myth2, galgotha, pingus, xracer..
: samba
: vmware
: mozilla
: kernel source

: And more.. Lots more than PCPlus manage. If a UK mag manages to pack as
: much on a CD as they do I'll be buying it, (again, as long as it's at a

: or so)

Yeah, during my time in sweden, I went and bought a computer magazine (for
again, less than a fiver) (can't pronounce the name of it), and on the cover
cd was Slackware 3.6. This was quite a surprise to me, because over here,
the trend seems to be to release only the "commercial" versions of linux,
with the tons of support and everything, and also to release the
less-than-new versions of the distributions. Speaking to some
english-speaking linux geeks there, apparently this is quite common, they
have a distribution on the cover cd just about every month. This is what
disappoints me about our magazines' coverage of linux. I know they are not
linux-specific, but along with all the AOL cds, and for VERY little extra
charge, they could easily stick a linux cd onto the cover, along with the
rest of the garbage. The people that aren't interested, could simply find
other uses for the CD.

I hope this new magazine will change this... for a free OS, it's relatively
hard for joe user to get a hold of what he wants (if he doesn't want RedHat,
SuSE or Caldera).
