Try doing adding the -v option:
$ fetchmail -p POP3 indigo.ie -v
This will give you a blow by blow of what fetchmail is doing. It might
provide some clues.
What mail transfer agent are you running (sendmail, qmail, etc)? What
distribution? Does anything get logged to /var/log/maillog? Or any
other files in /var/log?
