They will always die anyway : as soon as the modems finish negotiating
with each other, which is the moment that they connect, the tones from
the speaker will cut off automatically.
Using minicom you should indeed then see a logon banner, even if they're
using PAP/CHAP protocols to connect with. Have you tried pressing enter
a few times to see if you get a response?
