Thanks for replying. I did try
        ./configure --disable-nls

which was not effective.

I did the install following from the Slackware disk

a6/glibc1.tgz
a7/glibc2.tgz

I believe they give you glibc 2.0.7 support for Slackware.

After installing these files with PKGTOOL, I got a clean compile.
