"C++ How to Program" by Dietel and Dietel (Prentice Hall) is a safe bet
for C++ anyway. Covers most major topics including the standard
template library.

For pure C stuff "The C programming language" by Brian W. Kernighan
and Dennis M. Ritchie (2nd ed. Prentice Hall) is the definitive article.
