The white C book (which an ILUG person borrowed on me about two years ago,
and never gave back, though I've no idea who it was) is the best - and it's
quite small.
The only reason a programming book should be larger than 300 pages is if
it's got a massive appendix. Or it's one of the offical X books. If a book
is too big, the subject isn't worth knowing about, or the author can't
explain it properly.
