On that side, I'd strongly recommend "The Annotated ANSI C Standard" by
Shildt. When you open the book at any point, the left page contains the
original ANSI specification for C - the right page contains the same
thing translated into plain English. Best reference I've ever seen, with
the possible exception of the Camel book for Perl.
