I'm not sure of the exact effect (though I'm in the right place to ask)
but suffice to say that setting it on autopilot will cause more lag than
it solves. If the TCP timeout and retry settings on a client and/or server
are unacceptable, the correct answer is to tune the settings. Otherwise,
there is only so much bandwidth to go around, the speed of light can't be
beat, and multiple people trying automatic AYTs will find themselves with
considerably worse performance than if they just let the configured retries
take care of it.

If the remote server administrator can't or doesn't want to tune their
TCP settings, this may give you a clue that only so much bandwidth should
be allocated to the protocol :-)
