[ILUG] CD-rom Problem

I have a problem with setting up a cdrom that i'm hoping you can help me
with.

My CDrom is a matshita and its on a compaq armada 1700..

the kernal just gives the message that the cdrom does not seem to be a
block device..
is it a device driver problem ?

I've tried to use the CD-rom howto..

oh yeah and the linux is dragon linux and mini-dist. that installs onto t
dos partition..
