Is it IDE or Non-IDE ?
If you notice, some of the other CDROMs are wierd. You need to compile up
a special kernel for them, have a look into the "Non ATA CDROM" section of
the kernel config program, that "make menuconfig" brings up.

Sounds like it. Basically, your program is saying "Read a block from this
device". And the Kernel is saying "Hello...anyone there...I want a block",
and not getting a reply, or the device driver the kernel thinks is suitable
is finding no CDROM there.
