I seem to have somehow run into a rather troublesome wee problem today
Telnetting into this machine (RH 5.2 + fixes & various RH 6 packages)
kicks you out no matter who you are or where you're doing it from.
console login acts im much the same way and su just gives incorrect
password.
/usr/bin/passwd segfaults on execution unless provided with a username
after which it gives this error!
passwd: User not known to the underlying authentication module
taking passwd from another RH5.2 box & setting perms to match the original
didn't have any effect either.
I've nuked out the password entries in /etc/passwd, no change,
changed the actual passwd by pasting in the contents from elsewhere, and
restored an old file but all with no joy.
I've checked though messages which tells me the following
PAM_pwdb[5094]: check pass; user unknown <<==(this was root btw)
login[5094]: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM greebo FOR ray, User not known to the
underlying authentication module
login[5094]: FAILED LOGIN SESSION FROM greebo FOR , Error in service
module
The only thing that's changed on the system (apart from the
monitor) between stuff working this morning and now was that I upgraded qt
& installed lesstiff, both by rpm. I've uninstalled both and reverted to the
previous version of qt since but still no luck (yes I know it was a long
shot).
In short "HELP". I've no definite idea where things get checked after
you've typed a password (though I have to no avail tried re-installing
pam) so me mucking any farther would be a pure stab in the dark, I don't
particularly want to have to re-install from scratch as this system is
slightly vital on the network (DHCP squid mail ftp & samba etc) and
restoring from stuff from backups hasn't changed a thing....
ssh still works (thank christ)
& it had to happen when I'm changing the desk layout here
