You are the only one who replied.

I managed to fix the problem last night. I had plenty of disk space but
there seemed to be a problem with the installation of KDE base & libs. I
tried to upgrade the installed kdebase package from the CD but got
errors with failed dependancies for various libraries. Looks like one of
the packages I choose not to install is part of kdebase and as a result
these libraries didn't get installed. So I tried to upgrade the kdelibs
file. This gave me file conflicts with a package already installed
called kcmclock or something. So I removed kcmclock, upgraded kdelibs
and the upgraded kdebase and that fixed it.

Hurray. Now I just have to get my speakers repaired :-(
