On closer inspection of /var/log/messages I found the following
Sep 28 13:45:38 Linux ipop3d[810]: Login failure user=bernie
host=qc [192.xxx.xxx.xxx]
Sep 28 13:45:41 Linux ipop3d[810]: No such file or directory
while reading line user=bernie host=qc [199.xxx.xxx.xxx]
Sep 28 13:48:24 Linux inetd[237]: pop-3/tcp server failing
(looping), service terminated
User "bernie" was added in the past week but for some reason the
"adduser"
command did not add /home/bernie. When I added /home/bernie and
restarted POP3
it worked fine.
