I was to set up a 3 PC network for some lads in Galway a few years ago -
so I gave them complete instructions as to what they needed to buy.
Despite my insisting that they needed terminators for the BNC cable, the
clueless salesman in the shop (name withheld to protect the completely
guilty) wouldn't sell them to my friend because "Sure you don't need them -
just plug the cables directly into the network cards".
Needless to say whe I arrived down to Galway for the weekend and found no
terminators present I was a bit perplexed. What we wound up doing was
stripping the cables and shorting the core to the casing of the connector
via a pair of twisted together 100ohm resistors near either end. It
worked a treat for ages.
