[ILUG] less and ls colours

quick question:

Is there some reason why less does not display colours when it receives
piped ls output? More does, but less displays a load of color codes,
while less -r displays only in "black and white"?

I'm using the following:

less version 332
ls (GNU fileutils) 3.16
more 5.19?
