We at Maynooth have set up a small (toy!) Beowulf cluster with old 486s
and Extreme Linux (Redhat 5.0 with kernel modification to allow channel
bonding and with various MPLs included). Although it was of little use in
real simulations it did provide a proof of concept and we did carry out a
machine-independent (in as much as was possible) comparison between
MPI and PVM.
Next year I hope to convince our technicians to let us upgrade the networking
on a subset (or even the lot) of our lab computers so that we can have a
SCAN (SuperComputer At Night).
Wasn't there some guy on the list from DELL going to use their proof of
concept lab in Limerick to build a rather large beast during September to
try and see what some of the issues involved were. Does anyone know
what came of this?
