I've just installed SuSE Linux 6.0 with relative success - not very newsworthy.
It's on a notebook - a little more newsworthy, but not much.
Everything works fine except for X, which on a notebook is again not newsworthy.
And here's the interesting bit - the notebook is an Apple Macintosh G4 Powerbook !
and Linux is running under Connectix' Virtual PC - the whole thing's a bit like
VMware with the addition of an emulated processor.
It's for a friend of mine who's a web site developer and like all serious such
people he's a Mac user. Production sites are on Unix boxes (mostly Linux) and
for development he uses only Linux. However, when he needs to do an on-site demo
to customers or prospects he had to either bring a server or connect via a modem
neither of which are optimal. Now he can do his demos on his Powerbook, with Virtual
PC running Linux in the background i.e. a co-operative multitasking OS hosting a
preemptive multitasking OS which runs on a different processor.
And the cutest bit of all - never restart Linux. When Virtual PC is shut down, it
saves the processor state so when it restarts, Linux is back where it started. I'm
sure that some processes may be confused at the change in time, just like when you
make a large change to the system time, but ew've noticed no funnies yet.
Apropos of nothing, I know, but I thought it was interesting . . . .
