RE: [ILUG] Help!

I've managed to format the drive and now I'm going to copy the linux CD to the
HD of the laptop using a parallel link from the other machine. So I'll then use
the original install disk.
cheers for the help

Just a thought BTW, if you end up having the whole thing installed but no
mouse support. We use the TouchPad from synaptics which emulates a PS/2
mouse so your /dev/mouse should be a symbolic link to /dev/psaux and you
should use PS/2 as protocol. There is a chance that Compaq have used a
similar philosophy. If you want to use an external mouse instead just plug
it into the mini-DIN connector before powering on the system or insert the
external mouse and do a suspend/resume You're not able to use both the
TouchPad and the external mouse at the same time.

Yeah if your not in expert mode it tries to detect lots of
things and gives
best guess for certain devices, you should try it this way
and see if then
you get the option of bypassing the mouse prob. Also if you
get really
bogged down you can install without X and get Linux itself
running before
          installing X.

Don't even attempt GPM on the "nipple" until you get
some sort of
          mouse working within X.

                    OK, will try that...

I've no external cable for this machines
floppy. I was
          installing from a Dos
partition using the patch initrd60.gz with
loadlin and
          vmlinuz. No, I wasn't
installing in expert mode and at the time it
hung, I had
          forgotten about the
                    virtual terminals! DOH!

Ok, you obviously have another machine
running at the
          moment, otherwise you
wouldn't still be mailing us . . . Stick the
CD in that
          machine, connect the
notebook, create a Linux boot disk. Boot the
laptop from the
          bootdisk and
try to install over the network.

Have you got a cable for externally
connecting the floppy
          drive ? As a
matter of interest how were you installing
in the first
          place if the CD
isn't bootable, swapping the drives ? Also
were you
          installing in expert
mode per chance ? And were there other
virtual terminals
          available at the
time it hung. I.e. Alt-F3 to check whether
or not anything
          was going on in
                    the background ?

          yeah, I'll
                    use that mouse fix

I wouldn't be hugely familiar with
Compaq products
          but there
                    are 4 Compaq
notebooks listed in the URL I
sent:

                              Compaq LTE 5100
          <http://www.schou.dk/linux/XF86Config>
                              Compaq LTE Lite 4/25

<http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~alexj/linux/LinuxCompaqLite425.html>
                              Compaq LTE Elite 4/40cx

                              Compaq LTE5000
          <http://www.algonet.se/~rasan/linux.html>

I'm sure one of these would help
out no end. As
          for the
                    mouse, yeah you
might want to try plugging in an
external and hope
          it
                    doesn't simply confuse
                              the poor beast.

                                        where it freezes on

                              RH 5.2

                    consistantly and
