On thee point Caolan makes about becomng dependant on a particular
.cshrc, .bashrc, .exrc, .emacs.
I used to customize all of my keys for all kinds of power usage, but
at the end of the day I found that learning the GNU readline library
and sticking to bash and emacs is a much better approach. Practically
all the applications I now use regularly, ( XEmacs, Bash, gdb, ncftp
etc.. ) all use the the same key bindings.
I avoid aliases also, for the same reason.
my .bashrc is now tiny. Wish I could say the same for my .emacs.
