When I installed Red Hat 6.1 it crashed and corrupted the RPM database.
things were "installed" that weren't.. Perhaps the same happened when
you installed Mandrake?
I presume there's an inetd*.rpm file. Find out what it contains (rpm
-qlf inetd*.rpm) and then verify that it's installed (rpm -qa |grep
inetd) then, if you're absolutely sure it's installed, remove the
package and install it again. Chances are other packages are fscked too
though.
