With a small hard disk, it will that that bit more tricky to
compile up everything, so you should use a dist that you
can get pre-compiled binaries for easily. These days, that
also means a glibc-based dist, as libc builds of newer stuff
are getting rarer.
RH5.2 might be a good start, if you can de-select all the
X stuff during install. rpmfind.net has a massive RPM index.
I haven't tried it, but I hear that Debian is also very good
for these situations as you get that bit more control over
what goes on. And with more Debian-based distributions
appearing, .deb packages should start to get as common
as RPMs.
