strange,does it hang for a while and eventually boot up?
if so its more than likely your /etc/hosts
you should have:
127.0.0.1 yourhostname.whateveryouwant yourhostname
im not too sure about the whatever you want bit but i have:
127.0.0.1 Majestic12.esatclear.ie Majestic12
and that seems to work for me.

it should be your default window manager,try making a file .xinitrc in
your home directory with the line '/usr/bin/gnome-session' in it (without
the quotes).
