[ILUG] gpart is your friend

One day I ran some disk benchmarking software (for 95) on my newish 8g
drive. And then it was a 2g drive. This was a bad thing.

I spent a long time trying to get back all my data, but to no avail.
The annoying thing was that I knew the Norton Uitilities (or PC Tools)
of old would have been able to find my data since it was only the
partition table that got knackered. Unfortunately, ever since they put
a GUI on it Norton has failed to do anything usefull.

Anyway I decided that it was time to give Linux a chance at
resurrecting the disk. I found a utility called gpart (v0.1b comes
with SuSE 6.1, but the latest version is v0.1e from
http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/user/76201/gpart/) which said it would
scan the disk for what looked like partitions and recreate the
partition table. Which is exactly what it did. My disk is now back in
perfect shape and all my data is back again.

Just thought I'd let people know.

David
