M-x means Meta-x. Meta is bound to either the Meta Key, the Alt Key,
or failing that the Escape key.
M-x is called 'execute-extended-command' which allows you to type the
command name in, as opposed to tying your fingers in a know trying to
hold down 17 different keys at once, while pressing the middle mouse
button with the tongue.
No seriously though, Emacs rocks. vi does also. No religious war
here. Different tools for different tasks.
