You 're looking for
"Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" by W. Richard
Stevens.
It starts at a very basic level, like terminal I/O, moves on to
files, then to stuff like signals, process control, threading , daemons,
etc. It won't tell you much kernel stuff (besides system API's), but it's
one of the best foundations to writing user mode C code in UNIX. He's very
easy to read (almost a bedtime book) and he lais it out as it is, no
complications.
I'd also recommend "UNIX Network Programming Volume 1" by the same
author.
Expect a little trouble finding each of these, I could only get them
abroad (Melbourne & Chicago respectively), and the first one's print date
was circa 1993. They're each about £50 but very much worth it.

Could anyone tell me where I might get secondhand books on the
Design of the Unix OS and C programming for unix?
I've tried Chapters but they didn't have any relevant books. Waterstones
and HF had loads but I don't have a spare 100 quid.
